In between working on drawings for other people ( THANKS!!!) and The Hypo I’ve been drawing the next issue of Blammo. My goal is to get it done in time for the Xeric grant deadline in March. I have 12 pages done so far. And am grabbing any chance I can get to draw a panel here and there.

HERE IS A RARE PHOTO OF THE ARTIST AT WORK

I have two desks in my room but I’ve always felt more comfortable drawing on the floor or in bed. I think it’s just from habit. It’s the way I drew as a kid and I’ve just continued that way as the years went on. So, just about all of the issues of Blammo have been drawn on my floor next to my record player. In this photo I am drawing the upcoming issue.

That trash bag is full of old comic pages and Quizno’s 5 dollar foot long wrappers.

I like hiding things in Blammo, and giving them hidden themes and meaning. I started doing those kinds of things in Blammo #3.  And in one comic I hid Joseph Remnant’s address. Mail boxes will usually have the address “133″ written on them. Which is the number on the nightmare home I grew up in in New Jersey. I once did a longer comic about a guy walking around looking for Grant st., which is the street I live on.

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about Joseph Smith Jr. and the birth of the Latter Day Saints so that I can illustrate it for this issue. Growing up in a Mormon family, I understand that Joseph’s life has played a part in who I am at least indirectly. My home was eventually split in half over the believe in his church. An event which strongly messed me up, and confused me when I was younger. Being told two different things about the church from two different people who I loved equally, left me unsure of what to believe. Who was lying? Which one of my parents was going to go to hell? Ultimately I’ve learned to never fully trust or side with any two extremes. So now, in perhaps a misguided attempt to understand more about myself, I am researching and looking for the truth. A portion of this search will be published in Blammo #7. Below is a piece of that story. The story of Joseph Smith Jr.:

I just want to create a comic book that can be reread over and over like all of my favorite comics. That is what I aim for.

Jason Martin.

This is one of my favorite comics. It’s by Jason Martin, and I think it’s a great example of what you can do with comics. It’s a heartbreaking story. Very powerful and I love it. Thank you Jason.  You can buy his comics here.

The Book

For the past few days I’ve been working on putting together the Complete Blammo vol. one book, which will collect Blammo 1-5. So I’ve been going through the files on my computer that I haven’t looked at in a long time and cleaning up pages and putting them in some kind of order for this book.

I really think that this book will be good. I’ve been putting all sorts of things in it. I’m scanning in comics from different minis that I’ve done so that they can be included as well.

I’ve decided not to include Chicken Strips in this book since it’s the only ongoing story in Blammo, and I haven’t finished with it yet. But luckily people hate it so much that they probably wont mind.

A couple of days ago I did a talk at a Library in Cherry creek. It went well. As this comic by Sam Spina from his site clearly shows:
